Comic Relief – Communities and Sport for Change

Funding Body: Comic Relief
Description:
Grants are available for proposals which use sport as a catalyst for change, helping communities in several of the UK’s most deprived areas to take ownership, feel empowered and solve problems.

Status Open for Applications
Application Deadline 11/07/2016
Maximum Value: £ 75,000 Minimum Value: £ 40,000

Grants of between £40,000 and £75,000 are available for up to two years of activity.

Comic Relief expects to make between 15 and 30 grants across the UK.

Comic Relief was set up in 1985 to tackle poverty and promote social justice. This is achieved by raising funds and awareness, and allocating money donated by the public to charitable projects across the UK and in some of the poorest countries in the world, especially in Africa.

Comic Relief’s vision is ‘A Just World Free From Poverty’, where everyone is safe, healthy, educated and empowered. In the UK and all over the world, millions of people continue to live incredibly tough lives.

Comic Relief will focus its support to ensure everyone is:

  • Safe – everyone has the right to live free from violence, abuse, neglect and fear.
  • Healthy – everyone should have access to essential services and support which ensure physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • Educated -everyone is entitled to good quality learning that gives them skills and confidence to face the future with hope.
  • Empowered – everyone has the confidence, voice and opportunity to lead the lives they choose.

Comic Relief’s grants programme will focus on the following four areas, which will help it best achieve its vision:

  • Investing in children and young people to be ready for the future.
  • Empowering women and girls to be free to lead the lives they choose.
  • Improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable and disadvantaged people.
  • Building stronger communities in areas of disadvantage, deprivation and poverty.

Comic Relief recognises that sport continues to play an important role in improving the lives of millions of people in the UK and across the world, by bringing people together to play, learn, improve health and benefit from shared experiences.
The Sport for Change strategy runs across Comic Relief’s UK and international funding and across its four programme areas outlined above. Within this initiative, proposals are sought which use sport as a catalyst for change, helping people to do two key things:

  • Take ownership to feel part of increasingly inclusive and cohesive communities.
  • Feel empowered to identify and solve the social issues affecting their communities.

The Communities and Sport for Change initiative will support proposals that are using sport as a catalyst for positive social change in some of the most deprived areas of the UK.
The funding is intended for projects taking place in the following areas of the UK:

  • England – Knowsley, Middlesbrough, Kingston Upon Hull, Birmingham, Nottingham. Plymouth, Hastings, Great Yarmouth and Tower Hamlets.
  • Scotland – Glasgow and North Lanarkshire.
  • Northern Ireland – Belfast and Derry.
  • Wales – Blaenau Gwent and Denbighshire.

The deadline for applications is 11 July 2016 (midday).
